From Marie:

I moved to Seattle in 1966 and graduated from Franklin High School in 1967.  My graduating class had 600+ students so it was a big change for me and I found it challenging at the time.  I was married with two children, a son and a daughter, divorced ten years later and decided it was time to see the world, travel and go back to school.....so that's what I did.  I went to Europe, Hawaii and various parts of the United States and had a ball.  Then I decided I had better get serious about supporting myself so I went to YVCC and CWU and also completed a 2-year Chemical Dependency program at YVC.  I have been working in that field ever since.  I have worked both adult and juvenile corrections, 15 years in the Yakima County Correctional facility as a Mental Health Screener and now I am working as a CDP Liason for the social workers at DSHS/DCFS.  I have 3 grandchildren and one on the way and when I retire in 2009, I plan on spending lots of time with them.   That means traveling between Annapolis, MD and Yakima!

See you in a few days!

40 years in 700 words or less; After attending high school, dodged draft,YVCC, (A.D.D. sets in), drop out, join Air Force to avoid being drafted, (what the **** was I thinking ), security police tech. school, stationed at Fairchild AFB, married first wife, next stop Viet Nam of course, 1 year of growing up fast, back to Spokane, divorce 1st wife, move back to Yakima, back to YVCC to avoid steady job, (A.D.D. sets in again) spring break, left for two week trip, end up living in Phoenix, AZ, then Orlando, FL, the days agenda was usually tennis, a game of Risk or road trip to the beach, finally headed north to Uniontown, PA, start repossessing and transporting vehicles around US with friend, sort of saw lots of country, 38 states in first 6 weeks, meet lots of real losers, back to Yakima after 2 plus years of spring break, worked on hop ranch awhile, drove semi through Rocky Mountains awhile, quit to work as a local teamster driver, then dispatcher in Yakima for to many years, party, party, party, almost survive rip roaring twenties, cancer strikes at 29, party harder & like there is no tomorrow, might not be one at this point, recover from to much partying, evidently recovered from cancer too, fall in love for real for the first time, get dumped, quit teamster job, sell everything move to Seattle, late 80’s, goal - complete business degree at U of W before age 40, just made it, (no A.D.D. this time) fall in love second time, married this one, move to Hawaii, take job as Port of Honolulu ship agent, discover third love, recreational diving, (S.C.U.B.A.) not a woman but just as alluring, (so can still keep second wife I figure) become dive master extraordinaire and master scuba diver trainer, quit port agent job, paid for diving 4 to 5 days a week with tourists, to good to be true, just have to bring’em back alive, teaching dive classes and selling retail dive gear to feed obsession to keep diving, 1000 plus dives logged, quit counting, move back to real world, if you can call Salem, OR real, (had to set watch back 20 years to live here) thirteen plus years in same city, always asking self in winter months when all the rain has saturated even the rocks my reoccurring question in life, "What the **** was I thinking? Why did I ever leave Hawaii?" Started trading stock, buying real estate, remodeling, renting, big headache, sold all, now developing small acreage, tinkering around a new property, driving tractor, clearing brush, completing endless projects, chop wood, carry water stuff, still investing diversely in the market, easy bucks most of the time. Nothing will ever be so important that it can’t wait till tomorrow!

I’ve been married to Patricia Sullivan Peterson, the second love of my life referenced above, for 17 years. She’s the same wonderful Irish lass I met at the U of W in 1988 and who I now lovingly refer to as the "War Lord."  Why she put up with my nonsense this long is beyond me. Guess she has a good sense of humor. She’s an amazing woman with a thriving medical practice in Salem that will not slow down. No kids, much to my relief, just a wonderful Golden Retriever named Gus that goes everywhere with me. Recently completed dream home after 4 years of planning, clearing timber & brush on small acreage, punching in roads to the top of a bluff and fighting endless battles with the city and county. Can’t wait to start the process again! Extra acreage acquired will be a slow land development process that will fund retirement should it ever be necessary.

Life Is Good,

Dale Peterson

From Mark:

Hi everyone,

It has been a wild roller coaster ride these past forty years.
Chapter one... I went to YVC for one year then spent 15 months in Vietnam.  I was wounded in action a couple of times so my college was completely paid for at Central ending in a Physics degree.  Later in life I attended U. of Santa Clara where I was one class shy of an MBA.  (In Memoriam: While in Vietnam, I was returning from R&R and I had the good fortune to run into our classmate Doug Jones who was just coming in country.  Previously, on R&R I had met a member of his unit who had told me about them being overrun and resulted in hand to hand combat.  Doug was with a tough bunch of guys and three of them were lost on March 8th, 1970, including Doug.  We can be proud to have known him).
Next Chapter..... I headed to San Francisco to enter the Wholesale Optical Business (eyeglasses) with my Grandfather.  I wound up supervising three labs in San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.  Eventurally, I bought the San Jose lab.  Our own K.L. Johnson and his now wife, Carol, worked with me.  Bob Allwardt entered the picture for a short time also (he made me get a pilot's license).  Even with that much West Valley horsepower we couldn't pull it off and had to sell it before it closed  I only lost a house on that one.  Somewhere in there I got married and had two great sons, Andy and Matt.  I worked ther for a while longer until one of the new owners explored another opportunity with a Japanese company.
Chapter.... We headed for Portland, Or. and went to work for a Japanese (Norita) firm doing Anti-Reflection coatings on eyeglass lenses.  These coatings are one quarter of a wavelength of light thick.  It turned out to be a good skill to learn, because, in stepped SOLA optical, a large lens manufacturerwho was looking to buy Norita.  Negotiations broke down, and as it turned out, Sola bought me instead.
Chapter... Headed back to California, in Petaluma, to work in Research and Development. Sola handed me $1.5 million for my project to set-up an AR coating lab. Now that was some fun! I was fortunate enough to travel around the world picking up new technologies and to also set-up their lab. Oh, oh this is too easy...time to leave..
Chapter.... Here I go again.  Partnered up with a couple of guys in Portland, Or. again and started my own company to do AR coatings.  We mortgaged everything and started on a shoestring.  I was sleeping in an old trailer behind the lab, broke, but determined.  With some very committed employees we worked around the clock to build our business.  We found some old junk compact disk coating machines and turned them into Optical AR coaters.  (We were told it couldn't be done but we were too dumb to believe it.)  The business grew to approximately 1000 jobs a day so we opened a branch in Los Angeles.  Somewhere in this chapter, I got a divorce.
Chapter....Here comes Sola again.  They bought us out and franchised my technology to other locations in the U.S.  I spent three years traveling for them and finally retired at 53.  Oh, yes, got married again and have an 11 year old son, Spencer.  That's our picture doing the Macarena at his grade school (provided my wife doesn't delete it).  I am proud to say that my business with all of our employees was recently purchased by Zeiss Optical from Sola.  Everyone has done well.
Chapter.... Let 'er buck!  Who doesn't want to be a cowboy?  Well, I moved to the Wyoming boondocks where we have a 475 acre ranch (small by Wyoming standards) with 3 miles of river on it.  I commute to work on an ATV (no horses for me) and my best clothes are jeans and a Carhartt jacket.  I help my neighbor run about 100 cow/calf pairs on our ranch.  (We do the branding exactly like it was on the Horse Whisperer).   'Git 'er done'.  My son Spencer and I grow hay on about 100 acres (at 9 he was driving the tractor and doing the baling, this is a great place for kids.)  I only raise about a dozen head for myself which we finish for the natural beef market.  Currently, We are building a new house on the ranch.  The pay is terrible, work is hard, but the "Ranch Lifestyle" is great for us boys.  Unfortunately, Mom, a city girl, (you know the type, Green Acres...give me Park Avenue) isn't digging the bobwire repair and lifting bales of hay.....still I can hope.  In my spare time I volunteer at the local Community Center as the Treasurer/bookeeper/computer network administrator.  We furnish after school programs for the kids and some Senior activity programs.  I'm even learning how to camp!!!!  Whoopie!!!
Chapter.... Not sure what's next......we'll have to find out @@@@@@ the 50th.

Take care to all!

WOW... I am going to squeeze 40 years into one little paragraph.. It is hard to believe that we are all about 58 years old and staring retirement in the face -- I have 1 year 5 months 12 days and counting until I can wrap it up!! My husband, Bo, retired a couple years ago and has it all figured out!!!... I am looking forward to joining him. Bo and I have been married for 18 years and have two daughters between us. Mine is an RN at Harborview in Seattle and his works for Marsh in Yakima.  For fun, we enjoy riding our bicycles on different highways and biways, but our favorite place is on Lopez Island in the San Juans. We will occasionally park our bikes and jump into the kayaks.. When I have a chance to go for a hike I take off for the mountains around here and Bo heads to the golf course (without me)... I just don't have the patience for it... But, he loves it!!! In the winter we go cross country skiing.  So, with the good Lord willing, retirement will just be a continuation of the things we love to do, but just more often!!
I am hoping all of your are well.. I am enjoying reading the various bios.

Like others have said, sometimes it doesn’t seem like 40 years have passed since graduation. It’s great to hear what others are doing and where their lives have gone. Sorry that a schedule conflict won’t allow us to make the reunion. Hopefully the next one. Many thanks to the organizers of the reunion and the web site! As for me, after graduating from West Valley, I went to UW and majored in math. There I met my wife-to-be, Janine. We met when, because of a housing shortage, I was put in the basement of a girl’s dorm, dubbed “The pit”. Janine and I met in the dining area. We were married in her hometown of Everett Washington in 1972. We then went to Nashville Tennessee to Vanderbilt where I had a scholarship for graduate school. At first we thought we were only going to be there a couple of years and badly wanted to return to the west coast. However, gradually we came to love the gently rolling hills of Tennessee. After finishing graduate school, I got employment at Vanderbilt, and we never left. My job at Vanderbilt involves both research on adverse medication effects (like the ill-fated Vioxx) and teaching students in our Master of Public Health program. Both are fun. Our twin daughters Lily and Lea were born in 1979. Lea is now married and lives with her husband in Ardmore Oklahoma, where he is doing a postdoc. Lily is attending graduate school at the University of Fairbanks, Alaska. Janine and I are enjoying the “empty nest”. We particularly like to travel and I like photography (some of my pictures are at http://www.pbase.com/waynearay ). I also enjoy gardening and running; I am contemplating participating in my first marathon; something to do before turning 60.

Wow! 40 years. I'm sorry I will miss the reunion - a family wedding reception trumps it. I've lived in Albuquerque for 26 years. Before that it was LA and Seattle after leaving Yakima in '75. I'm a clinical social worker with a private practice. My partner, Sandy, was a member of the nursing faculty at the University of New Mexico for over 30 years. Her son, my stepson Chris, is completing his last year of college before he is off to graduate school. I love travel and have spent time in Peru and India as well as traveling around Europe a couple of times. The family includes a parrot from the Amazon, 3 cats, and a dog. Life is good. I'd love to see you all. Maybe the 50th!! Oh my.

Where to begin?  This year marks our 20th year in Olympia. Five years ago, Larry and I moved into what I call our “old folks” home.  It is a smaller, one story home. We have a beautiful yard that I love spending time working in and then enjoying the fruits of my labor from our deck.

Larry and I celebrated our 37th anniversary this year.  Larry is retired but has more than enough to do, such as, master gardeners, golf, AV coordinator at church, coaching girl’s and boy’s tennis at Olympia High School, plus all the errands he runs for me.

June marked my 10th year at my current position.  I am the Executive Assistant to the Director of Senate Committee Services.  Senate Committee Services provides the non-partisan research and policy support to the members of the Senate. In a nutshell, my job is the “office manager/personnel officer/resident mom” to a staff of 60 during the interim and 90+ during a Legislative Session.

This year our son and his lovely wife made us first time grandparents.  Caleb Martin Rus was born May 3rd and we’ve had similes on our face and joy in our hearts from the moment he was born.  Being a Grandparent is just about the greatest thing ever!  The father (Kevin) of our wonderful grandson is our youngest child and he is entering his 2nd year as a special education teacher at North Thurston High School.  He also coaches girls’ soccer at the high school.  Our daughter-in-law (Melissa) is a part-time nanny for a remarkable family.  She is able to take Caleb with her to work, which pretty much allows her to be a stay at home mom!

Our oldest son (Aaron) is a firefighter here in Olympia.  He has a steady lady friend but there never seems to be any mention of wedding bells…at least by him. We think he spends all his energy on the 2 vehicles he is restoring.  He enjoys lots of sports activities and recently moved into a house that he is remodeling.  He is a busy guy!

I still play tennis 2-3 times a week.  I’m involved in multiple tennis leagues and sometimes my teams are successful and sometimes they’re marginal.  I try to play golf when the weather is nice.  But my golf scores leave a lot to be desired so I like to think golf as a “nice walk in the park”.  It goes without saying…my most recent “favorite activity” is to baby-sit as often as I can!  We are huge Mariner fans…yes, even when they are losing!  And the men in my life are Seahawk fans but I’ve never been able to get into football.

I look forward to seeing you soon.  For those of you that can’t make it this year…we hope to see you at the next reunion.

Forty years in a paragraph or two?? Let's see...

We moved to Spokane the day after graduation, and I attended Eastern in Cheney for a couple of years before moving to Seattle to work for Air West (you remember Air West--"the On-Time Airline"!) When Joe finished his Army stint, we were married in 1970 (it'll be 37 years tomorrow, on the 10th). We honeymooned in Mexico, where we shared our bed with bedbugs.

When his company offered him a transfer to the San Francisco Bay Area, we considered it a two-year adventure, and accepted. Twenty years later, we were finally back in the Northwest. It was an adventure, though; we raised a wonderful daughter and son there, and it was great timing for Joe's electronics background. I worked and volunteered in the school district, we were lucky enough to travel to some amazing destinations (Australia, England, Scotland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Mexico...)We thought we had it all!

We were getting really homesick for the Northwest, though, and when the computer industry slumped in the early 1990s, we bit the bullet, chucked everything and moved to Coeur d'Alene. Our daughter, Sarah, was finishing up at UW by then, our parents were aging, and it seemed like the right time to come back. I began working for the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, and Joe worked in the computer industry in Spokane, eventually retiring as Director of Operations with a company that builds ruggedized laptops. I stayed with the County for twelve years, and retired also in 2004. We're currently being mini-cattle barons, raising a few natural beef cattle, doing lots of fishing, camping, playing in the lake, growing the biggest garden on record (I didn't have much turf in California!), snowshoeing, skiing, and hibernating. I do an extended kayak trip here and there, mostly on the Flathead, Clark Fork, and Missouri Rivers.

We still think we have it all. We live in the most beautiful place imaginable, but we commute frequently to Alaska since both of our childrens' families live in Anchorage. We have the three smartest grandchildren on the planet. Tragically, we lost our son just last month, to a sudden cardiac arrest. Tom was 31, a wonderful son, husband and father, and we will miss him terribly. We'll be in Alaska even more often now, helping his wife and daughter as needed. We feel so privileged to have had him in our lives, but it's still a little too new to know where we go from here.

I guess that's all the news that's fit to print. Like everyone else, I suspect, I re-read what I've written and realize that for everything I've said, there are mountains of things unsaid. Anyway, the journey has been, for the most part, an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. We've been touched by teenage years, old-people aches and pains, tragedy and more, but I'm still looking forward to the next adventure.

Miss Purdy's Class, 1st Grade, Wide Hollow. I'm the little boy with his eyes closed. I wasn't sleeping, just dreaming about my 40th Class reunion.  I'll let you know if it was as I imagined.
Well, enough of that.  After graduation I worked in Seattle for a year and then Portland, Oregon for a year. Then the great Yakima Valley called me back.  The City of Yakima Fire Dept. needed a few good men and luckily I passed all the tests and was hired. It was a very challenging as well as a very rewarding 22 year career. It was an experience of a life time.  Most firefighters have moonlighting jobs (off duty jobs) and I was no exception.  In the first few years on my days off I loaded/unloaded moving vans, made pharmacy deliveries, drove the trollies and finally in 1973 I started a landscaping company.  After my retirement from the City I expanded the landscaping business.  Then in March of 2004 we purchased the old Evans Nursery & Garden Center on Tieton Drive.
My hobbies include restoring old cars, golf and fishing.
Without a doubt, my biggest accomplishment has been my 39 year marriage to Kathy, our two super children -Todd and Tracy and our very special grandkids - Hannah, Taylor, Drew and Mason.
Thank you Lyle, Gay and the rest of the reunion committee for all your hard work in planning and orgainizing the reunion as well as the outstanding web site.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. Jerry
